In response to the collapse of Roe v. Wade, there are lots of Christian people who are challenging fellow believers to participate in solutions that, while helpful, are simply unrealistic for many. Now let me state at the outset that I fully support adoption, foster care, crisis pregnancy centers, single mom ministries, etc., and all the other “Christian” things other Christians are telling us we need to start doing now that Roe v. Wade has been overturned. But those are only half the solution because it only addresses half the problem. And I would argue the downstream half. These solutions merely deal with the effects without addressing the cause.

The other half of this problem is the sexual immorality that grips our society. In other words, we have to recover the biblical understanding of sin in order to address the actual problem. Sexual promiscuity and hook up culture are the natural outworking of a pagan understanding of human purpose. According to the secular pagan culture, because we are all evolved from a primordial soup, it follows that there is no absolute truth that applies to all people of all times. So therefore do whatever the latest fad says to do and you will be just fine (sexual fads included). In other words, you have no ultimate purpose, so just make up your own.

But the God who made us has a different take. His Word says that sex is not given to you merely for yourself. Sex is given to mankind only in the context of biblical marriage: one man and one woman in covenant marriage for life.

Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

Hebrews 13:4 (NASB)

And sex is given to you as a means of glorifying God.

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.

Colossians 3:23 (NKJV)

As such, we should inquire of God’s Word to determine how He desires us to use sex: 1) to grow oneness in marriage (Genesis 2:24-25) and 2) procreation (Genesis 1:28). All of life belongs to God, and you and I demonstrate love for Him when we submit to His Word (John 14:21). To quote the New City Catechism:

Q: What is our only hope in life and death?
A: That we are not our own, but belong body and soul, both in life and in death, to God and to our Savior Jesus Christ.

New city catechism, question 1

Your life belongs to God, full stop. He made you and He alone knows what is best for you. The Lord has spoken to you and me and given us standards for morality and purpose for every part of our lives. So while I fully support all efforts of Christians to come to the aid of single moms, we also must call people (single and married) everywhere to honor the marriage bed by reserving sex and sexual desires only for marriage. The virtue of chastity gets a bad rap. Now chastity merely for chastity sake is quite tiresome. But chastity for the sake of obedience to Christ and your eternal soul is quite another matter. Along the way, as you obey God’s commands regarding sex, you will start to see that sexual immorality is the biggest part of the abortion problem.
